In-Character Information
Name: Hoshikawa Subaru and War-Rock
Series: Ryuusei no Rockman / Megaman Star Force
Canon-Point: Near the end of the third game's storyline, before heading up to Meteor G to destroy it.
History: Subaru's game history is in the wiki, here. But I don't like how it's written, so you can also have this history I wrote up in an old app of his.
In the year 22XX, technology has become centralized on using Denpa (radio-waves) as a network to link all devices together in the earth. The technology continues to grow in leaps and bounds, creating new possibilities with every jump. Denpa is used so often that the network has developed into its own world invisible to the human eye: the Wave World. Technology no longer uses batteries or electricity to power themselves-instead all they have is a simple router known as a Comp Space, where clusters of Denpa reside. These Denpa become figures called "Mr. Hertz," an AI that appears in various forms and performs various tasks depending on their location and purpose. The Hertz travel the Wave World as signals, creating a closely interlocked system that encompasses the whole world, bringing communications to a whole new level.
This growth in communications leads people to treasure connections with others over much else, and the electrical link called a "BrotherBand," which seems not too different from adding someone on Facebook. However, it signifies that one has bonds with others, and is respected as a status symbol...even to the point of allowing one to acquire privileges such as free bus rides or luxury rooms in hotels if one has many "Brothers," or people who are linked to one by a BrotherBand. It's also found that they can lend power through those bonds with others...in more ways than one.
Hoshikawa Subaru is an eleven (possibly twelve at the point in the series he's pulled from, although there is no confirmation) year old boy who suddenly gains a unique and dangerous power when he encounters a wayward alien fugitive, War-Rock, who's body is made of Denpa. War-Rock reveals that he is fleeing from his planet as a fugitive, and requests to borrow the boy's body because something about the Earth's field limits his power as a foreign inhabitant, and he must fuse with a human from Earth to be able to use his true power. At first, Subaru refuses, but when viruses and other Denpa beings from War-Rock's home planet create chaos in an attempt to find him, he agrees on one condition: that the alien tell him about his missing father, who apparently died in a space station accident three years prior and whom War-Rock claimed to know.
Through fusing with War-Rock, Subaru becomes Rockman, a Denpa-Human who can traverse both the real and Wave World. Through this unique ability, Rockman can solve many problems in the network, from mild virus attacks to threatening hacking attempts...and to even save the world from other individuals with the same legendary power over Denpa. Over time, he has been forced to fight both enemy and friend for the better of the world-and has even become regarded as a hero over time. He has saved the world twice-once from invaders from War-Rock's planet, once from a scientist using ancient Denpa technology to control the Earth and divide humans into classes...and quite possibly once again from a man using the very waste produced by Denpa to control a meteor made of the very same material...a meteor that is large enough to hold the very planet's existence under its sway.
War-Rock's history can be found on his Wiki entry. But again, I feel like providing my own write-up.
War-Rock was a Denpa being from Planet AM, a planet occupied with nothing but EM beings like him, which was blown to bits by its neighbor that was occupied with similar beings, Planet FM, when the paranoid King Cepheus was convinced by his manipulative right-hand man, Gemini, that Planet AM's proposal of a friendship/partnership between the two planets was just a front for an invasion. War-Rock fled to Planet FM and enlisted as a warrior there so that he could soon have his revenge on the FM King.
It was then that Earth made the same mistake as Planet AM-it sent a proposal to Planet FM to build a BrotherBand between the two planets-a bond of friendship and an alliance. Cepheus had the space station (aptly named Peace) who had sent the proposal captured, and the occupants put on trial, in which they were sentenced to death for attempting to invade the planet. War-Rock was assigned to be the guard of the humans. One human, Hoshikawa Daigo, constantly probed and pried into War-Rock's business, asking questions and irritating the revenge-driven alien. When War-Rock managed to steal the key to Cepheus' most powerful weapon, Andromeda, and prepared to flee, he was delayed by Daigo, who requested that War-Rock take him and the rest of the crew with him. War-Rock eventually agreed to turn the crew into Denpa beings like him-but warned that he wouldn't help them afterward, that they would be on their own, turning down an invitation to Earth by Daigo. After he had turned the crew, they were interrupted by another FM-ian, and were forced to scatter. War-Rock happened upon a signal that Daigo had sent to his son on Earth, and followed it.
Three years later, War-Rock arrives on Earth and meets Daigo's son, Subaru, a ten-year old boy who has become antisocial due to the loss of his father and the fear of losing another loved one again. War-Rock convinces the boy to let him stay with him by revealing that he knows the boy's father and promises to tell him about Daigo. Through this promise, War-Rock fuses with Subaru to become Rockman, and helps the boy defend Earth. He eventually develops a close friendship with the boy, which soon teaches him about kindness and eliminates his desire for revenge. They work together to defeat the FM-ians who follow him to Earth, as well as the ultimate weapon, Andromeda, and convince Cepheus to complete the BrotherBand and begin to rebuild Planet AM.
War-Rock continued to live and work with Subaru on Earth afterwards, facing down the occupants of an ancient civilization on Earth called Mu as their powers were used by a woman intent on ruling it. Some time later, War-Rock was updated to become a Wizard-an EM lifeform designed to aid and support humans in specific areas-in War-Rock's case, he becomes a Battle Wizard meant to help defend against virus attacks.
Personality: *also from Subaru's old app!*
On first glance, Hoshikawa Subaru has the personality of any ten/eleven year old boy-chipper, full of energy, eager to meet most anything with enthusiasm. A closer look shows that he seems to act somewhat differently at times-he can be reserved with his own emotions, and can even be empathetic at times if one strikes a chord with him. He treasures his friends and others he keeps close greatly, and suffers a drastic change in personality if even one of them is lost-sometimes reverting to a moping wreck of his former self, other times becoming a far stronger, more determined character in order to save them again.
He wasn't always like this-three years prior to the first game, his father, who Subaru idolized greatly, disappeared with the space station he was on, Peace, and from then on Subaru closed his heart to nearly everyone save his mother, frightened to love again. He lived the three years prior to the first game as a soft-spoken, self-isolated kid who refused to seek connections to others, fearing the pain of losing them again. It takes meeting the alien fugitive, War-Rock, and the highly emotional battles that happen with him, to cause Subaru to interact with others again, and to slowly learn that he can, indeed, make friends, and that he does have the power to protect them.
Even after that large initial change, he still learns from his battles. During the events of the second game, he was slowly overwhelmed by the public's knowledge of his and War-Rock's fused form, Rockman, and their sudden lauding of his heroic actions. He slowly began to fold under the public's expectations of him, breaking completely into his former self when he was unable to save any of his friends save for one (the said friend then proceeded to scold him back into shape). Eventually, he learned that he had to simply do the best he could-even if he failed expectations he would leave a torch for another to pick up. He learned courage.
The third game sees him grow into a leader figure in the face of loss-when his friends are taken from him, seemingly smitten dead in the blink of an eye, he starts to assume control, and encourages others around him not to give up. This hints at a charismatic side to his character-that he is, indeed, slowly adopting Rockman's characteristics as his own.
Subaru treasures a long standing dream to become an astronaut and visit space, fueled by his father's disappearance and a desire to find him.
*War-Rock's personality section is also from his old app!*
War-Rock has a brash personality, and prefers to tackle a problem head on. He can get angered quite easily, and prefers to resort to violence and fighting to get things done (he's often caught saying that he wants to go "buck wild" on something, indicating his desire to fight). War-Rock also has quite the ego, and responds to anything that remotely hints at an insult with a ready-to-battle attitude. He has a tendency to come off as rude at best, often biting back with insults or sarcasm (or a combination of both) if someone or something annoys him. He has little to no restraint, and it's often up to others to keep him in line if he ends up coming close to crossing it.
However, he hasn't spent his time on Earth unchanged-he's grown to care for others, and will do whatever is possible to protect them-however he never says this directly, the only indication given that he cares about others is when he encourages Subaru in his efforts to protect them, and masks it under his constant desire to fight.
He also seems to have an insatiable curiosity, which may or may not stem from either his position as a visitor on a foreign planet and/or his everlasting desire for adventure. The questions he asks about human ways can make him sound either childlike or ignorant at times. He apparently doesn't get along well with women, as he constantly claims-whether it's because he's trying to feign ignorance to another certain FM-ian's jibes or because of his lack of tact, this trait of his often ends in hilarity.
War-Rock also appears to have a sense of humor-he makes the occasional joke every now and then: he once jokes with Subaru that he can predict who he'll marry in the future and presents Subaru with the picture of a boy simply to mess with him. He also seems to enjoy teasing others that are close to him (and does constantly tease Subaru about his close relationship with two girls).
Powers: On his own, Subaru has no power-the only thing remarkable about him is that he's nimbler than the average eleven-year-old and has a slight resistance to Denpa waste (called Noise) due to fighting with War-Rock so long. He has a Visualizer (a set of goggles/glasses given to him by his father) that is able to see Denpa-and if War-Rock's presence is nearby, it can also see the Wave World. (Of course, this is rendered virtually useless out of his own canon, although it might be similar to a Silph Scope.) He also has a Hunter VG, which is his personal portable communications terminal. It holds his personal data, acts as a videophone, serves as a home for War-Rock (as well as allowing War-Rock to become solid!), but without the Wave World network to power it, it's rendered useless unless near a strong electromagnetic or radio field. The battle Cards inside the hunter are anti-virus programs that are also fairly useless outside of his canon.
War-Rock is completely made of denpa, and thusly is invisible to the human eye, as well as intangible and can go through solid objects. Without the Hunter-VG, he cannot become solid and unleash his favored clawing attack, but he is able to go inside and inhabit other technology. Despite being intangible, he is made of energy and thus can be hit by many energy or special attacks from Pokemon, particularly electric or psychic attacks.
Normally, the two would be able to fuse into Rockman, the Denpa-Human but War-Rock claims there's something, some kind of energy, that's keeping them from doing so. Maybe this world is just different.
Starter Pokemon: Rocky, the Riolu.
Writing Samples
First-Person Sample:
I stare down at the little blue...creature that just seems to have appeared next to me. Neither War-Rock or I understand what happened...we just stepped out of that Noise Wave, and suddenly, we're in a new place. There's no Wave World here, either, so my Hunter won't work...how will War-Rock and I get back into the Noise Wave?
The creature lets out a yip, and then suddenly narrows its eyes and looks up past my shoulder.
"E-eh? What is it?"
"Ri!" And then it suddenly moves, and charges right at War-Rock! War-Rock looks as shocked as I do, since he shouldn't be seen, but luckily it just goes straight through him, before yipping again.
"That...that thing can see me?! What kind of Earth creature is that?"
"I..." And then I swallow-this doesn't mean... "I don't know. This isn't an Earth animal, War-Rock...where are we?"
Third-Person Sample:
Subaru stares at the red and white ball, trying to make sense of it. Instead of using nets, or traps, this...capsule is used instead? But how could it fit something-a living, breathing something-so much larger than it? And apparently comfortably?
"This makes no sense..." Subaru can't help but murmur the thought.
"Oi. You fuse with an alien from outer space and fight intangible virus-monsters, and you're saying something else makes no sense?"
War-Rock always seems to know how to make Subaru laugh. It's a good thing, too, as it's apparent that the serious-minded boy needed that laughter. He's loosened up.
"Maybe it's like what I did with your pops. I changed him into energy, like me, you know?"
"That makes sense...but how does it do that so quickly, efficiently..." And now his curiosity comes in at full force. Subaru always did like to take machines apart and fix them up again.
"Oi, you'd better get another one of those instead. Rocky's in that one, you know."
"Ah, right..." And Subaru seems lost in thought again. Slowly, a smile comes on his face. It's a relief to War-Rock, because it means the kiddo's starting to lighten up a little and not be so serious, but he wonders what the kid's thinking to suddenly smile again. "Ne, War-Rock?"
"What is it, kiddo?"
"I was thinking, do you think this thing would be able to catch you, too?"
"WHAT?!"
